We Won't Get Fooled Again?

June 22, 2005 / by longthought

Well that''s what the Who said. But they ended it with, "Meet The New Boss, Same As The Old Boss". That''s just the way it is today, at least as far as us and our excuses for fighting wars.
I was listening to a 3* General Vine on the news last night. He was explaining why we needed to ''WIN'' the war in Iraq. He stated if we don''t win in Iraq and secure the borders of Iraq terrorists will occupy Iraq and be able to set up terrorist bases to attack America
and become a major threat to our way of life. I stopped for a moment and thought this sounds real familiar. Wait a minute, that'' what they told me about Vietnam!!!! On the very same day President Bush was meeting with the highest ranking official from Vietnam concerning free trade with Vietnam General Vine was explaining the threat Iraq would impose if we did not ''WIN'' the war over there.
Well I got news for you. WE LOST THE WAR IN VIETNAM.
Now thirty years later we have direct flights to Vietnam, free trade with Vietnam and the world and America don''t seem to be having much of a threat from Vietnam. As a matter of fact it seems to be just the opposite, we as a Government seem to doing better with Vietnam now that they are under COMMUNIST RULE. The argument was always,"We have to stop them there or they will spread throughout the world!" The same argument they are using in Iraq. Okay people c''mon let''s not get fooled again. That argument just doesn''t hold up.

It also seems to me that after we won World War II we spent a huge amount of time and money rebuilding Europe and Japan. Those countries never even paid the interest on the huge loans we gave them. We need to cut our losses and get out of Iraq, and I'm a republican. Lets spend all of that money here making sure all of our kids can read, write and do basic math. I'm out.

I submit that there is alot more this than was posted. The whole Vietnam thing happened at a time when the world 9and our view of it) were very different. While I wouldn't argue that Vietnam was the right war at the right time, I will say that a policy of "containment" served the U.S. well during the cold war...we did "win" that one.

As for Iraq, I don't necessarily agree with the General's comments but I do agree that planting democracy (no matter how imprefect) in the toilet that is the middle east cannot be anything but helpful to our long-term interests.

As Sec. Rice recently said (paraphrased) our policy for years was hands-off and tolerance in return for "stability" and cheap oil..that hasn't worked out too well. Lets try a new approach and "spread democracy".

Monumental changes like those proposed will take years and generations to take hold. If you believe that freedom, democracy and capitalism can improve the lives of untold millions, lets give this a chance to work.

    Remember...I'm from Austin!

Thanks for your comments on my site. Isn't it great that we can agree to disagree! What a great society we've created out of a past filled with hatred, ignorance and bigotry. I don't even have to worry about being car-bombed for not supporting your views...or do I?

Love the Who analogy! Though when contemplating Republican thought, the line I prefer is, "I know the hypnotized never lie." Irregardless of one's point of view on the Vietnam War, it was essentially a civil war. We had a choice to join the winning side when Ho Chi Minh requested our help to remove the French. Most of us know the choice we made and from whom he got eventual help. Iraq now is a mess of our own making. Had we gone after Bin Laden when the vast bulk of the world's opinion was with us instead of chasing selfish interests the point the General was making would have been moot.

Bush the First, in his courting of an Iraqi civil war (Gulf War) and subsequent betrayal of those who rose against Hussein did as much to garner anti-American sentiment and foster deep seated distrust of American aims within the Iraqi people as did Bush the Second.

People are inherently selfish and desirous of protecting their self-interests. I fear that we may have to pay a few, "We deserved thats" back, thanks to Bush I and II before much of the world is ready to feel America's pain any time soon.

true, the argument is plain stupid. But it was a good song.

I think that now that the Warsaw Pact is kaput they keep trying to find someone to hate.
